As part of Peru’s Shakespeare Lives campaign, we presented “Imagina Shakespeare”.
“Imagina Shakespeare” is a theatre play commissioned by the British Council in Peru in collaboration with Gran Teatro Nacional as part of their audience development programme that reaches thousands of schoolchildren yearly. The premiere of the play was on 12 April 2016.
We share here the words of Director Alberto Isola regarding his impressions about “Imagina Shakespeare”.
“We just had Imagina Shakespeare’s premier and I must say it has been one of the most important premiers in my life as a theatre director. The audience’s reactions, entirely formed by teenagers that laughed, got excited, identified themselves with the characters and their words, confirm not only his greatness as a playwright but, and this is the most important thing, the outstanding power that theatre has. All our theatres should be crowded with spectators like them, and if they aren’t that is our responsibility. Let’s bring everyone to the theatre, no matter their age or level of education. Let’s turn it into the mirror our country needs to move forward. It is not enough to sit down and wait for them to come. Let’s embrace the quest.”
