IELTS Academic Test, Part 2: Reading

Duration: 60 minutes

Format:

  • Reading three long texts with assignments (including diagrams, graphs or illustrations).
  • The texts range from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical.

The reading comprehension section consists of 40 questions designed to test a wide range of reading comprehension skills. These include reading comprehension of main ideas, details, understanding of logical argument and recognition of the text authors' opinions, attitudes and purpose.

This section includes three long texts that range from factual information to discussion and analysis pieces. These texts are drawn from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. They have been selected for a non-specialist audience, although they are suitable for people entering university courses or seeking professional membership.

IELTS Academic Test, Part 3: Writing

Duration: 60 minutes

Format:

  • A written assignment to describe, explain or summarize a text or diagrams (a minimum of 150 words).
  • Writing an essay (a minimum of 250 words).

The topics are of general interest to examinees and suitable for those entering undergraduate and postgraduate study or those seeking professional registration. There are two tasks:

  • Task 1: you will be presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and asked to describe, summarize or explain the information in your own words. You may be asked to describe and explain the data, describe the stages of a process, how something works, or describe an object or event.
  • Task 2: you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem.

Responses to both tasks should be formal in style.

IELTS Academic Test, Part 4: Speaking

Duration: 10 a 14 minutes

Format:

  • Personal interview with your examiner where there will be brief questions on familiar topics and you will be asked to speak in detail about a topic.

Please note that depending on the location of the test center, the Speaking section of your exam may be scheduled on a different day.

The Speaking section tests your use of spoken English. All exams are recorded.

  • Part 1: The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
  • Part 2: You will be given a card asking you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask you one or two questions on the same topic.
  • Part 3: You will be asked additional questions on the topic of Part 2. This will give you the opportunity to talk about more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the exam lasts between four and five minutes.

Some of our IELTS test centers will implement the Speaking test via video call. This means more flexibility and availability.

You will take your IELTS Speaking test via video call at an official IELTS centre with the same high standard of identity verification. The test will maintain the one-on-one interview format with an official examiner and will be exactly the same as the face-to-face test in terms of content, scoring, timing, difficulty level, question format, security provisions and biosecurity protocols.
