The IELTS General Training test measures your English language proficiency in a practical, everyday context. The tasks and tests reflect work and social situations.

Duration of the IELTS General Training test: 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Format: the test has four sections: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expresion and oral expression. When you register for your IELTS test with the British Council, it will take place at an official British Council IELTS test center.

Your Speaking test can be taken on the same day as the other sections of the test or up to one week before or after the test day. You will be notified in advance if your Speaking test is on a day other than the main test day.

IELTS General Training Test, Part 1: Listening tasks

Duration: 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

Format: four audio recordings in different accents. You will write your answers using:

  • multiple choice.
  • linking options.
  • labeling a diagram.
  • sentence completion.

You will listen to four recordings of native speakers in the English language and then write your answers to a series of questions.

  • Recording 1: a conversation between two people in an everyday social context.
  • Recording 2: a monologue spoken in an everyday social context, such as a chat about local facilities.
  • Recording 3: a conversation between up to four people held in an educational or training context, such as a university tutor and a student talking about an assignment.
  • Recording 4: a monologue on an academic topic, such as a university lecture.

Examiners will look for evidence of your ability to understand main ideas and detailed factual information, the opinions and attitudes of speakers, the purpose of an expression, and evidence of your ability to follow the development of ideas.

IELTS General Training Test, Part 2: Reading comprehension tasks

Duration: 60 minutos

Format:

Reading three texts with the following tasks:

  • Section 1: two or three short factual texts.
  • Section 2: two short texts on a work situation and factual texts.
  • Section 3: a longer text on a topic of general interest.

The reading comprehension section consists of 40 questions designed to test a wide range of reading comprehension skills. These include reading comprehension of main ideas, details, speed reading, understanding logical argument and recognizing the opinions of the text's authors, attitudes and purpose.

This includes excerpts from books, magazines, newspapers, posters, advertisements, company manuals and instructions. These are materials you are likely to encounter on a daily basis in an English-speaking environment.

IELTS General Training Test, Part 3: Writing assignments

Duration: 60 minutos

Format:

  • Letter writing assignment (minimum 150 words).
  • Writing a short essay (a minimum of 250 words).

The topics are of general interest. There are two tasks:

  • Task 1: you will be described a situation and asked to write a letter requesting information or describing the situation. The letter can be personal, semi-formal or formal in style.
  • Task 2: you will be asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. The essay can be more or less personal in style.

IELTS General Training Test, Part 4: Speaking tasks

Duration: 10 to 15 minutes

Format:

  • Personal interview.
  • Short questions and talk in detail about a familiar topic.

Please note that, depending on the location of the test center, you may need to book the Speaking section of your test on a different day.

The Speaking section tests your use of spoken English. All exams are recorded.

  • Part 1: The examiner will ask you general questions about yourself and a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
  • Part 2: You will be given a card asking you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. The examiner will then ask you one or two questions on the same topic.
  • Part 3: You will be asked additional questions on the topic of Part 2. This will give you the opportunity to talk about more abstract ideas and issues. This part of the exam lasts between four and five minutes.

Some of our IELTS test centers will implement the Speaking test via video call. This means more flexibility and availability.

You will take your IELTS Speaking test via video call at an official IELTS center with the same high standard of identity verification. The test will maintain the one-on-one interview format with an official examiner and will be exactly the same as the face-to-face test in terms of content, scoring, timing, difficulty level, question format, and security arrangements.
